Understanding PVC Sizing: The labeled size of PVC fittings refers to the inside diameter of the pipe that fits into them, not the actual hole measurement. Since you can only measure the outside of installed pipes, use this reference guide to determine the correct fitting size:

½" pipe measures ¾" on the outside
¾" pipe measures 1" on the outside
1" pipe measures 1 ¼" on the outside
Note: 1 ¼" sizing rarely used in spa applications
1 ½" pipe measures 1 ⅞" on the outside
2" pipe measures 2 ⅜" on the outside
2 ½" pipe measures 2 ⅞" on the outside
Example: A fitting labeled as 1/2" (with a 3/4" inside diameter) is designed for pipe measuring 3/4" on the outer diameter.
